Fine line drawing of three overlapping downward-pointing triangles in black outline on a plain off-white background.

Three overlapping downward triangles

Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

The image shows three equal-sized triangles with their points facing downward, each drawn as a thin black outline. They overlap one another at different heights, creating intersecting lines and a central area where the shapes cross. The plain off-white background and the simple, even line weight give it a clean, minimal composition.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The third station was the one nobody wanted, a cairn on Crow Stoop where the wind came off the moor sideways and the theodolite legs skated on the wet flags. Thomas had set the other two himself, Hob Lane and the church tower at Eyam, and he swore the angles closed. Hester checked them anyway, sitting on an upturned crate with the ledger across her knees, because a closed triangle was only as honest as the pencil that drew it.

She drew them the way the Ordnance men had taught her, each station a point, each sighting a line, every triangle hanging point-down like a plumb weight pulled toward the centre of the earth. Three of them overlapped on the page. Where two crossed, the figures were tidy. Where all three crossed, a small pale diamond opened in the middle, and the angles inside it came to nine seconds of arc more than they should.

Nine seconds was nothing to a county map. Thomas wanted to call it instrument drift and go down to the Rose and Crown before the light went. Hester sat with the number until the sheep bunched behind the wall and the cold came up through the crate. Then she wrote it in the margin in small square figures, the way her mother had taught her to record a debt she meant to settle herself.

When the sheet was engraved the diamond was still there, a blank the printer never thought to fill. People asked about it at the market. Hester told them the hill had shifted a little to make room for the three of them, and that the sums had been right all along, only not for the spot where everyone was standing.
