Mirrored cat heads with balloons and bells
Neo-trad · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
Two mirrored cat heads sit side by side, each shaded in grey with amber eyes, pink noses and fine whiskers. Pink balloons rise above each head and gold bells hang from thin lines below. The linework is bold and the shading soft, with saturated colour on the balloons and bells.

The bells had been on the Pritchard sisters' collars since the spring, and nobody at the Tuesday market could tell which twin was which, least of all Arthur, who had been asked to walk the bride up the aisle of St Mildred's with a cushion in one hand and a bag of birdseed in the other. The cushion was for the rings. The birdseed was for the cats, who had been promised a place in the photographs and had made their feelings known by sitting on the font.

Mrs Pritchard had tied pink balloons to the pew ends, though the florist swore they would drift off by the reception. Balloons, she said, were how you let a wedding know it was happy. The vicar, a thin man with a cold, said nothing about the cats until the organ stopped and both animals walked down the nave in perfect step, bells chiming at every pad, and stopped at the altar rail to look up at the groom with the same narrowed, unimpressed amber stare.
The groom laughed first. Then the bride did, then the whole front row, and somewhere behind the pews a balloon knocked softly against the window. Arthur found the rings in his waistcoat pocket, where he had put them for safety beneath a folded order of service and a single grey hair. He realised he had been holding his breath.
Outside, the bells jingled all the way to the car park, and nobody could say for certain which twin had got the last word.
