Grey cat with purple clouds on the neck
Neo-trad · Neck · Colour · Photo
A grey tabby cat's head faces forward with orange eyes, dark stripes on the forehead and white whiskers, set against stylised purple clouds. The linework is bold and black, with grey shading on the fur and red shading on the inner ears. The tattoo sits on the back of the neck and fills most of the frame, with the hair of the wearer visible at the top right.

Three days out from Falmouth and the glass had been falling since breakfast.

The cat, whom the crew called Parson because he sat so still and judged everything, had gone below an hour earlier. Ada found him in the lamp room, pressed against the warm chimney of the lamp, eyes lit orange as two coins. He did not move when she spoke. He only turned his head towards the forward bulkhead and let out one low complaint.
She had sailed eleven years and knew better than to ignore a cat that wanted something. She followed him down the ladder into the dark of the number two hold, where the bales of wool smelt of rain and lanolin. A rope had slipped from its cleat. Beneath it, a boy of about twelve lay curled between the bales, shaking, a loaf wrapped in sacking clutched to his chest. "Don't tell the bosun," he said, low.
Ada crouched and looked at the cat, who had settled on the nearest bale as if he owned the cargo. "I shan't tell him," she said. "But you'll eat something hot before the squall breaks, and then we'll see." Above them the ship heeled. Parson yawned, showing a pink mouth, and washed one white paw as though the matter were settled.
