You find the cat on the third morning, sitting bolt upright on the iron gate of the walled garden as though someone has hired her to guard it. Nobody on Hatherley Lane claims her. Mrs Pim at the bakery says she came over the wall in April with a torn ear and a grudge, and has been setting her rent in mousetraps ever since.

You have been clearing the bed under the medlar since Easter, pulling bindweed from the roots of the old rose, and the cat watches every handful with yellow eyes that find the whole business faintly absurd. Her skin is warm where the sun has reached it, a peach shade that shows the veins in her ears. When you kneel she comes down the gate in three neat drops and sits in the dirt beside your trowel, close enough that you can smell the heat off her.

By the end of June the bed is clean and the rose has put out a red flush of new shoots. You expect her to leave. Instead she walks ahead of you along the gravel, tail high, and stops at the greenhouse door where the brass latch has rusted into a curl.
