Moon phase tattoos across a back

Dotwork · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A row of moon phase tattoos runs across the upper back, with a full moon at the centre flanked by gibbous phases and crescents, and two further crescents sit lower on either side. The moons are shaded in soft grey with stippled dots and fine texture for craters, while the crescents are solid and smooth. The warm sepia filter and vignette border give the photo a faded, vintage look, with long hair falling over one shoulder.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Orla had counted the phases for eleven years on the Tycho ring, and the sky had never once matched the chart pinned above her bunk. The chart said waxing gibbous. The window said a sliver of Earth, blue as a bruise, and beyond it the grey pocked face of the moon that everyone still called the Old Lady, though nobody had walked on it for a century.

Her supervisor, Dessler, wanted the phase schedule rewritten for the cadets. "Nobody looks up any more," he said, tapping the tablet. "They look at the ring's clock."

Orla didn't argue. She took a stylus and drew the shapes by hand on the back of a requisition form: full, then the gibbous swell, then the crescents thin as fingernail clippings. She pressed hard on the craters, stippling dots until the paper dimpled. Her grandmother had done the same kind of work with a sewing needle and a bottle of ink in a flat above a chip shop in Leeds, and Orla remembered the sting of it and the cool cloth afterwards.

On the last shift before the rotation, she logged the sequence against the real light. The crescents at the edges of the window caught the sunward glare exactly where the old drawing promised. She sent the corrected chart down the line with one note: the dark phases are still there, only turned away. Dessler replied with a single word, "Keep it." She pinned the form beside the window, where the new moon would arrive in the morning.
