Small circle tattoo on the inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A photograph of a forearm and open hand against a plain white background, with a single small circle tattooed on the inner wrist. The circle is a thin, even outline with no shading or fill, and it sits close to the wrist crease. The image is monochrome and the tattoo occupies only a small area of the frame.

Nobody aboard the Ellen Marr trusted the fog, least of all Corran Blythe, who had sailed the Dogger for thirty winters and still counted the bell strokes under his breath. When the binnacle lamp guttered off Rockall, he handed me the lead line and told me to call the depth every fathom, then sent me forward to find the iron loop on the bow rail. It was no bigger than a thumbnail, and he said that if I could feel its edge in the dark, I could find our way back to the hatch.

I found it by touch, cold and slick, and called the bearing back through the murk. Corran said nothing for a long while. Then he pressed my hand flat against the rail and told me the old men used to say a ring with no break in it was a promise to come home. He had one of his own, he said, drawn small on the inside of his wrist where the pulse runs, and he rubbed it with his thumb whenever the sea turned mean.

We raised Lerwick two days later with the lamp mended and the fog gone. I never asked Corran where he got his mark, and he never asked me where I got mine. On the quay he took the lead line from my hands, coiled it neatly, and tapped the iron loop once with his knuckle, the way a man checks a door he has already locked behind him.
