Dotted constellation line on upper back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A person with short dark hair is seen from behind, showing a small tattoo on the upper back near the shoulder blade. The design is a fine, dotted line of small points joined in a angular, star-like pattern that tapers to a single point at the lower end. The ink is black or dark grey against light, neutral skin, and the plain white background keeps the focus on the tattoo.

Right, sit down, the lot of you. The chairs at the back are for anyone who still owes Mr Harrap a library book, and I can see Dennis Pryce hovering, so that's you told. Now, you'll all remember the year we pricked stars into black card with a dressmaker's pin. Forty-one dots each, held up to the window so the light came through. Most of you made the Plough, or a bit of a dog. Lorna Quayle made a hook.

Mr Harrap said it wasn't a constellation, it was a mess, and he said so in front of the whole class. Lorna didn't argue. She just said it was the way her father's boat came home through fog from the Hebrides, the stars he steered by when the lighthouse was hidden. The line bent where he turned for the channel. The last dot, the one you can barely see, was the harbour light, and she'd pressed the pin in so hard the card dimpled.

Harrap kept that card in his desk drawer for thirty-odd years. Lorna's father never came home from the next winter's crossing, and nobody in this room had the nerve to ask her about the hook again. Then, last spring, a parcel came to the school office with the card inside it, wrapped in tissue, and a note that said only, keep the window light on.

So I've brought it. It's on the table by the urn. Go on, hold it up to the glass. Look at the last point, the one that's bigger than the rest. That's where the way home is.
