Moon phases along a forearm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A row of eight moon phases, from a thin crescent to a full moon, runs diagonally down the forearm from the wrist. Each moon is shaded with soft grey and faintly purple-grey tones, with blended gradients suggesting the curved surface of the moon. The skin tone is light and the background is a weathered wooden deck.

Ada had kept the moon book for her father since the spring he stopped being able to read the small print, and she knew the sky the way other women knew their larders. Every evening she climbed the chapel steps above Saltcombe with a pencil and the cocoa tin where the tide tables lived, and wrote down what the moon had done. Eight shapes, from a sliver on the Tuesday to a full white plate over the harbour wall. The men on the quay said she was the only one in town who could tell them when the Skerry would show its back at low water.

The trouble came in the August the Pelham boy went out past the breakwater without a lamp. His mother climbed the chapel steps with her hair in rags and asked Ada what the moon had been doing that night, as though a pencil could change it. Ada opened the book and found the page. The sliver had been thin, a paring off a fingernail, which meant the sea would run low and quick over the bar. She had written it down. Nobody had thought to ask her to read it aloud.
The boy came home at dawn with a cut across his palm and a crab in a bucket, grinning as though he had invented the tide. Ada sat on the steps with the book on her knees and worked out the next eight nights, one line at a time, in a hand that did not shake.
