Six small dots in red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple run in a row across the inner wrist, in a dotwork style.

Six rainbow dots on the inside of a wrist

Dotwork · Forearm · Colour · Photo

Six small solid dots sit in a diagonal row across the inner wrist, shading from red through orange and yellow to green, blue and purple. Each dot is a similar size and filled evenly, with no outlines or shading between them. The soft natural light and plain background keep the focus on the colours and the spacing of the dots.

Four in the morning and the ovens are already breathing. Mrs Okonedo has left a tray of cold dough proving under a damp cloth, and I have been told not to touch it until she is back from Leeds, so naturally I keep lifting the corner to check it has not gone flat. It has not. It is doing exactly what it is meant to, which is more than I can say for me.

I have spent the past hour lining up the day's colour the way Mrs O does it, which is to say left to right, fussy and without apology. Red jam in the squeeze bottle, then the apricot glaze, then the saffron buns in their yellow paper cases, then the pistachio, the blueberry, and the lavender sugar she keeps in a jar with a lid that never quite sits straight. She says the order matters for the eye. I have never asked her what the eye is for.

The first customer will be the man from the bus depot who orders a single sausage roll and counts out his change in coppers. After him, the post office girl, and then the street market lot who come in shaking rain off their coats. I will serve them all with my sleeves rolled up and flour on my forearms, and nobody will ask why I keep pressing my thumb against the inside of my wrist, where Mrs O once pressed six dots of food colouring to show me how to match a sponge to a tin.

She said the dots were practice. I thought she was being funny. Now the sun is starting over the chimneys and the loaves are coming out gold, and I think she was only half joking.
