Star constellation tattoo on ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small black tattoo of scattered dots and tiny eight-pointed star shapes forms a constellation-like pattern across the side of the lower leg. The linework is fine and the marks are solid black with no shading. The ink sits on warm skin against a blue denim background, with a silver chain anklet visible below the tattoo.

Dear Nell, the stew caught again on the third night out of Falmouth, and Cook Halloran swore at the pot as if it had insulted his mother. I've been running the galley since. Busy hands leave the mind free, which is how I came to be counting stars through the porthole above the potato sacks.

Tomas, the deckhand from the Scilly boat, asked me what the dots were called. I told him the Plough and Orion, and he said those were wrong, they were just dots somebody had got bored of joining. So he took the back of a ration docket and drew his own. Little eight-pointed stars for the bright ones, plain dots for the rest. He called it the Lantern and made me promise to find it.
Last night the sea lay as flat as a plate, and I stood on the aft deck with my cold tea and looked. Most of the sky was cloud, but past the hook of the masthead light there were three points that matched his drawing, with a single dot sitting at the bend like a dropped crumb. I nearly woke the whole watch to show them.
I haven't told Tomas yet. He's in his bunk with a fever and a fresh sheet of paper. Put the kettle on when you read this, Nell, and step outside. If you find the Lantern, you'll know a boy in a rough bunk drew it for his sister, and I'll owe him a proper look at the sky when we're back in port. Yours, Maggie.
