White dot and circle pattern on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a forearm bearing a pattern of pale, raised circles of varying sizes, surrounded by smaller dots and a fine dotted line running along the edge. The circles have subtle shading and highlights, and the pattern spreads diagonally across the arm. The image has no colour ink, and the texture may be white ink or raised skin, so it should be reviewed.

The ice on the top trough had gone grey by the time you reached the gate, and Mr Pryce's dog was already sitting in the lee of the barn wall, refusing to be useful. You carried the hammer in your coat pocket because the handle had split last March and you had not yet got round to replacing it with the one from the hook. Your breath went ahead of you in small clouds. The yard lamp buzzed.

The trough held a skin of ice an inch thick, and when you struck it the crack ran out from the hammer in a pale starburst. Under it, trapped in the glass like pennies in a jar, were the bubbles. Dozens of them, some as wide as a coin, some no bigger than a lentil, each one rimmed with a faint silver line where the cold had caught it. Gran used to say the trough breathed out in the night. You had not believed her then. You knelt on the wet concrete and looked at them for longer than the job needed.
Along the top rail of the paddock fence, frost had settled in a row of beads, each one separate from the next, and you thought of the wire you had strung there the summer your father stopped being able to climb the ladder. Beads on wire, bubbles under ice, the same small patience in both. You broke the ice with three careful blows, not one, so the pieces came away whole enough to lift.
When the last shard floated free, the water beneath was black and quiet, and a single bubble rose from the mud, paused at the surface, and held there, shining, before it went. You filled the buckets. The cows were already lowing from the far shed. By the time you got back to the house the light had come up pale over the top field, and the trough was clear to the bottom.
