Scattered coloured stars on a wrist

Forearm · Colour · Photo

A trail of small five-pointed stars in varying sizes runs diagonally across the inner wrist and forearm, with red, orange, blue and dark navy stars. The stars are simple solid shapes with clean edges and no shading, and they are spaced loosely so the trail looks like it drifts upward toward the hand. The background is a sunlit, shadowed outdoor surface with warm lens flare at the top left.

Dearest Ottilie,

The tin stars are finished, all forty-one of them, and Master Varda says the Lantern Guild will not be able to call us careless. Five points each, cut from the offcuts of the copper roof on Sallow Street, then painted in the red of the dyers' quarter, the orange of the bakers, the blue that Corin mixed from river clay, and the navy the tanners insisted on because they never let us forget the procession belongs to everyone. The small ones I cut myself with the sharp shears, sitting on the cold step of the sundial.

Something went wrong on the last morning. Corin climbed the east wall to fix the first star to the bell tower, and the cord slipped. He caught the rail with one hand and held the bundle over his head like a prize, laughing, and the wind took three of them clean out over the marsh. We watched them tumble and wink until the reeds swallowed them. Nobody scolded him. Master Varda just stood there with her mouth open, which I have never seen before.

So we did the only sensible thing and hung the rest in a trail instead of a constellation, starting low at the fountain and drifting up the stair toward the gilded hall, smallest at the top. From the square it looks as though the sky has been pulled loose at one corner and is climbing back toward the roof. The children say it is a path for the lost stars to follow home. I told them the marsh is only a short walk away.

Write soon, and tell your mother the red is holding.

Yours in ink and salt, Hesper
