Mountain and bird ankle tattoo
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a foot and ankle showing a small tattoo of mountain peaks with a few birds in flight above them. The linework is thin and mostly solid black, with light shading on the lower ridges. The ink sits on the outer ankle, with a tan suede shoe and a weathered wooden deck softly blurred behind it.

You always said the peaks looked like a row of folded blankets.

The ravens have nested under the crag again. Three pairs at least, though I counted only the one that dives at the dog. There were swifts too, the first of the year, scribbling over the lower slope as if they were late for something. I wrote it all in the back of the almanac, the way you used to, with the date and the wind. Mr Holroyd from the far farm says the birds know the weather before the fell does, and I told him that was why they never bothered to stay for tea.
I am writing this on the step because the kitchen is full of Father's coughing and the kettle is losing its argument with the range. Yesterday I found your old compass in the drawer under the bread knife. The needle still sticks to north. I have put it on the sill where the light comes in, so that when you do come home you will know which way the hills are, even if you have forgotten the shape of them.
Above the wall just now, two birds went up off the ridge together and bent away over the valley, one gaining on the other. I did not write down their names. I expect you will tell me what they were when you come.
