Mountain and heartbeat line on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A thin black heartbeat line runs horizontally across the inner wrist, with a sharp peak in the middle of the design. Shaded black and grey mountain form sits at the centre of the line, with soft grey shading on its lower slopes. The image is a close, straight-on photo of the wrist against a dark red leather background, with the tattoo framed in the middle.

The monitor on the cardiac ward kept its own time, a green line stepping across the screen while the window behind it filled with the same grey mountain it had filled for thirty years. Nurse Agnes Dorrit had stopped noticing the view. Tonight she noticed it, because the night sister came in from the car park and said the cloud had come down over the col, and the mountain rescue lads were still out.

Her son Tom had gone up with them that morning, against her wishes, with a rope, a flask and a bag of oatcakes. Before he left she gave him a strip of the old trace paper from the ward, the kind that curled at the edges, and told him to bring it back with the peak on it. He laughed and said it was only a line. She told him every line was a count of somebody's nerves, and he should mind his own.

At half past two the phone rang in the office. Two men were down, one with a broken leg and one who had sat in the snow and would not stand. Agnes went to the window and pressed her palm flat on the cold glass. Somewhere up there the search lamps swung slowly, and she found herself counting their sweeps against her own pulse.

They came down at first light on a sledge, Tom walking at the front with his helmet lamp switched off. He handed her the paper, creased and damp. Across the top, in his blocky capitals, he had written the names of the two men. Under them he had drawn the line the way she had taught him: flat, flat, then a sharp climb to a single point. Beside it he had sketched the mountain itself, grey and steep. Agnes smoothed the paper on the desk and said nothing, because the peak sat exactly where it should.
