Small mountain range tattoo on the ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of a mountain range with several peaks, drawn in thin dark linework with light shading on the slopes. It sits horizontally across the ankle of a bare foot, with the hem of denim trousers visible above and a wooden floor below. The ink is a single dark tone and the composition is centred and minimal.

Sit down, the lot of you, and stop pretending you can't hear me over the radiators. Forty years I've been telling this story to anyone who'll stand still long enough, so you'll manage a few minutes in the hall. From the top windows of Hollins Road school, on a clear March morning, you could see the Carrick Fells standing along the horizon like a row of tired elbows. Most of us never looked. Ellie Brannigan looked at nothing else.

She drew them every day in the back of her exercise book, not the hills exactly but the gaps between them, the dip where the cloud sat like a dropped scarf. Mr Pryce kept her in at break for it. He said geography was about rivers and rainfall, and a girl who drew mountains would end up with nothing but a sore neck. She kept drawing. The summer we left, she stood by the bike sheds and promised she'd stand on the highest of them before she turned thirty, then come back and tell the school they'd been right to wait.
The rest of us went off to Leeds and Swindon and a call centre in Bolton. Ellie went walking. Every few years a postcard arrived with a grey ridge on the front and nothing written on the back but a date. Then one autumn a envelope came to the office with a pencil sketch inside, the range seen from the far side of the valley, and a note that said: Got the view, Mr Pryce can keep his rivers.
Last week I went up to the top corridor for the first time in years. The window still faces west. Somebody had breathed on the glass and drawn the peaks in the condensation, neat and thin, and the radiator had dried them to a faint smear. I stood there a long while. The Fells were still out there, unchanged, which is more than I can say for any of us. The sketch is in the box under the stage, if anyone wants a look.
