A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rope was already gone when Ivy Marsh looked round, and by the time she had hauled the Patience back against the lock wall with a boathook and a curse, the cat was sitting on the coal bunker with his whiskers pointed at the sky, as if he had done it on purpose. Mr Pennock, who had kept the lock at Stoke Mill for forty years, said cats on boats were bad luck. Ivy said he had said the same about her, and she had never once fallen in.

Pennock's grandson arrived that afternoon with a new length of hemp and a grey ribbon he had found snagged in the reeds. "Yours?" he asked, holding it out. It was faded at the edges, tied in a careful double loop. Ivy knew it belonged to the Mary Ann Ellis, the boat moored below the weir, whose owner had died in March and whose cat had been taken off to a cousin in Leeds. Nobody had thought to tell the cat.

She tied the ribbon round his neck, which he permitted with the air of a duke granting a favour, and they set off downriver at the slow pace the Patience preferred. Past the mill the water widened and went the colour of weak tea. Every time she looked up he was watching the bank where the willows dipped, as though someone might be walking along it with a bag of fish heads.

At Hollin Bridge she throttled back and let the engine idle. "Right then," she said. "Where are we going?" The cat stood, stretched, and leapt onto the towpath, trotting straight for a woman in a green coat who was calling a name Ivy had never heard. The ribbon caught on the gate latch and came loose. Ivy watched it flutter in the reeds and decided she did not mind at all.
