Mountain lake inside a triangle line drawing

Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

A hand-drawn design of a rugged mountain range rising above a still lake, with dark shadowed slopes at the lower left and right. The mountains are built from fine hatched and cross-hatched lines, while the lake is shaded with denser marks. A double-lined triangle frames the scene and a plain open circle sits at the upper left as a sun or moon.

The third tray was the one that always went wrong, so I gave it the most care. Dough still cold from the proving room, flour to my elbows, and I was drawing the lame across each loaf at the shallow angle Ivor taught me, the blade skating rather than digging. He never said much at the bench. The score is where the loaf decides how it will open, he said, and after that it's the oven's business, not yours.

He left his drawing pinned above the sink when he retired to his sister's in Keighley. It was done in fine black ink on the back of an old delivery sheet: a ridge of peaks built from tiny slanted lines, the lines crossing wherever the rock folded, and a still stretch of water at the foot with its shadow laid in heavy. A plain ring hung at the upper left. The sun, he'd told me, if the hills ever let it up before seven.

At ten to five I unbolted the shutter. Over the ridge the sky had gone the colour of weak tea, and the puddle in the yard held it flat and perfectly still, so for a moment the whole valley seemed to stand upside down in the car park. The bread came out gold and split along every line I'd cut. I had scored the last loaf differently, a single ring in the crust, and when I lifted it from the peel the ring had opened into a clean pale gap.

I carried it through to the front window and held it up to the glass. Over the ridge a thin grey light was coming, and for once the sun was early.
