Stippled faceted crystal design on paper

Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash

A pen drawing of a faceted crystal or rock shape, outlined with angular planes and filled with stippled dots that create shading. A straight diagonal line runs across the top of the drawing, and a black fineliner pen rests in the upper right corner. The work is entirely in black ink on pale paper, with the density of dots varying to suggest light and depth.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Harrow Point's lens had cracked along a diagonal, and Edwin Cole spent three evenings at the kitchen table with a fineliner before he would let anyone near it. He drew it on squared paper, pricking dots where the glass had gone milky and leaving the clean prisms bare. The dots told him more than the cracks did. Dense where the light had been bent hard, sparse where it slid through without a fight.

The lens was older than the electric line that had reached Skelling in the spring. Its panels were cut like a jeweller's stone, each prism a small hard mountain of glass, and Edwin knew them the way a man knows the furniture of his own house in the dark. The crack ran from the top bull's-eye down through three of them. The glazier in Brindle said he could re-grind the damaged pieces if they came over on the supply boat before the autumn gales, packed in straw, with nobody dropping them on the slipway.

The boat came on a Tuesday, grey and low in the water. Edwin and the boatman lowered the crate down the stone steps on ropes that smelled of tar, and neither spoke until it was stowed. When Edwin offered the drawing, the boatman turned it over and asked if it was a map of somewhere. Edwin said it was the lamp as it had been, the parts that still held.

That night he climbed the tower with the spare burner and stood where the great lens had hung, the bronze frame bare around him. The sea turned under the dark. He set the drawing on the sill and let the plain beam pass over the paper, catching every dot, so that for a moment the little crystal on the page seemed lit from within, and far out a boat altered course towards it.
