Mountain landscape in a circle on a thigh
Dotwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A circular tattoo shows snow-capped mountains beneath a radiating sun, with a few birds and wispy clouds in the sky and a stippled lake reflecting the peaks below. The mountains are built from fine lines and shading, while the sun and lake are rendered with dense dots, and the design is framed by a thin outline circle. The tattoo is in black and grey ink on a bare thigh, with a patterned red garment and a plain white brick wall in the background.

Dear Hester,

The lake has finally given up its reflection to me. For three weeks I have sat on the stones at the north shore with a sketchbook and a pen full of ink, trying to get the peaks to sit upside down in the water without the wind tearing them apart. Father always said the mountains were honest because they showed you their true shape. He never mentioned that the lake lies about them every morning and every evening, and that you have to forgive it for the lie before you can draw it.
Yesterday the sun came up behind the Grey Sisters and threw its rays straight across the water as though someone had spilt a box of needles. I counted the birds going over, eleven, then lost count when the cloud came down the valley in strips. Anselm, the boatman, who has rowed surveyors out here since before the railway, laughed at me for trying to stipple the water. He said I should draw the depth instead. I told him depth is only what you cannot see from the top.
I am sending this with the cart on Thursday, along with the finished sheet. You will see that I made the lake dark at the bottom edge where the shadows gather, and light only where the peaks reach down into it. I have not drawn the circle yet. The office wants a frame, something to hold the view still. I think I will leave the edge open and let the mountains keep moving.
Your loving sister, Margit
