Mountain, pines and cabin in a diamond

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A diamond-shaped design shows a mountain peak at the top and a pine forest with a winding path and a small cabin with smoke rising from its chimney below. The mountain is built from fine lines and stippled shading, while the top edge is filled with horizontal hatching. The tattoo is entirely black ink in shades of grey, with a clean, balanced composition.

The path you asked about is still there, though the posts marking it have leaned over like men at a bus stop. Mr Harrow from the dairy came up with his mule on Thursday to say the lower road is closed past the bridge, and I told him the bridge was never the problem, it was the men who came after it. He laughed and went back down with a sack of flour I had not asked for. I have counted the flour twice since. It is all there.

I am writing because I found your old compass in the drawer under the ledger. The needle sticks at north, and I thought you would want to know that I have decided to let it. Some directions are better kept than walked. If you come up in the spring, bring the good cups and the bad news, and we will argue over which is which beside the fire.

Yours from the top of the diamond, June.
