Mountain range tattoos on calf and thigh

Dotwork · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

Two tattoos of layered mountain ranges sit inside rectangular frames, one on a lower leg and a larger version on the upper leg. The peaks are built from fine stippled dots and clean contour lines that shade the ridges from light to dark. The image is black and white, with the larger piece filling most of the right side of the frame against a plain light background.

The plate is already cold when Mr Pryce lowers his lamp beside it and taps the ridge you spent three days on. "Too even," he says, and the pencil end moves over the copper like a dowsing rod. "Mountains are not tidy, Ellis. Stipple where the light gives up and let the lines do the shouting."

You bend over the hair-fine nib again. The Carrick Fells come up under your hand one dot at a time, thousands of them, each pricked into the zinc with a patience that makes your wrist ache by noon. Where the slope falls into shadow you press harder, and the grey thickens like weather rolling down a valley. The contour lines come last, sharp and sure, fanning off each summit so the eye knows which way the rock wants to run.

By the time the lamps go out the office smells of ink and paraffin. You stay behind to fix a blur near the eastern col and find the shadowed flank has already been worked. Someone has added dots in the hollows, faint and uneven, pricked with a steadier hand than yours on a day that did not shake. Pryce went home at six. His stool is pushed in square to the desk, the way he leaves it when he means to come back.

You sit down, take up the nib and add your own dots beside his, until the two of you have shaded the mountain together and neither of you can say where one hand stops.
