Mountain landscape with moon and flowers on a calf
Traditional · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a mountain range under a crescent moon and a scattering of dotted stars, with pine trees in the foreground and a cluster of flowers and leaves at the base. The mountains and ground are built from bold outlines and dense hatching, while the stars and flower centres use stippled dots. The design is entirely black ink in shades of grey, arranged as a tall vertical panel along the limb.

Thessa had counted the stars from the high pasture every night since her brother went over the ridge with the salt caravan, and every night there were one or two more than the night before, which she took as a sign that the sky was keeping its own accounts. The goats knew the way down better than she did. She left them to it and sat on the flat stone with a pot of ochre and a bone needle, pricking dots into the wool of her cloak in the pattern the old women used to mark the pass.

The crescent came up late, bent like a bow someone had left on the rock. Below it the peaks stood in their grey layers, one behind another, and the pines on the lower slope were dark enough to hide a man. She had drawn the mountains so many times now that her hand did it without her, hatching the shadow side with short strokes while the cold got into her knuckles.
On the fourth night a lamp came up the track, and then a second, and she heard her brother calling the goats by the names she had given them. He came into the firelight with the salt sacks gone and a bruise over one eye. He said a landslide had closed the road and the caravan had turned back to the coast, and that he had walked the high saddle alone because he had seen her fire from the valley. She showed him the cloak. He ran his thumb over the dots, the peaks, the small flowers she had sewn at the hem where the wind wore it thin.
"You drew the way home," he said. "I nearly missed it." She did not tell him she had drawn it so the pass would look like a place a person could reach.
