Mountain peak and sunset in a circle on a forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A snowcapped mountain peak with faceted white, blue and dark planes fills the lower half of a circular design. The upper half shows a sky of orange, yellow, red and purple in angular, layered strokes. The tattoo is solidly shaded and sits centred on the forearm against a plain grey background.

Rhona Tait counted the boats back in before the light went, nine hulls nosing into the harbour mouth with the tenth still missing. The Margaret Ann was late, and the wind had swung north-west, which meant the mountain would show clear across the water. She stood on the breakwater with her flask going cold and watched the peak lift out of the haze, its snow cut into faces like glass, blue in the hollows where the ice held the shadow.

Her brother Iain talked about that mountain as if it owed him money. Every winter he swore he would climb it, and every summer he sailed beneath it instead, out past the skerries where the cod ran thick. Behind the peak the sky was going the colour of bruised plum at the edges and burning orange in the middle, laid down in hard angled strokes like someone painting in a hurry. "Sunset's a liar," he used to say. "It does the same trick every night and still gets the praise."

At quarter past nine a light blinked low on the water, and Rhona counted the flashes the way they had agreed years ago: three short, one long. She took the lamp from the bench and answered, three short, one long, until the hull came round the headland with its nets streaming and the engine coughing like an old man on the stairs.

Iain was at the wheel, salt white in his beard, and he lifted one hand without looking up. Behind him the peak had faded from white to pale blue to nothing, but the sky above it still burned. "Told you," he said, and tied off the bow line. Rhona handed him the cold flask anyway, and for once he didn't argue about the tea.
