Peace symbol with mountain landscape on thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A peace symbol contains a night landscape with angular, faceted mountains, a red moon, clouds and stars in the top half, and pine trees with a deer standing in a clearing in the lower quadrants. The design uses bold dark outlines with flat blocks of colour and soft gradient shading in the sky. The vivid reds, oranges, teals and greens sit against the skin of the upper thigh, which fills most of the frame.

The third night the moon rose red over Gallow Ridge, Ada Mercer gave up pretending she had not seen it and climbed the drystone wall to the stone. Her grandfather had carved the thing the summer the two families stopped speaking: a circle split into four, each quarter a window onto the valley. The top quarters held the peaks, angular as broken glass, with stars crowding the sky above them. Below, pines stood in a clearing where a stag waited, unafraid of anyone.

Everyone in Lower Tarn knew the feud had started over a ewe and a boundary stone that moved in the night. Nobody could say which family had moved it. Ada's brother Tam wanted the stone broken up for hearthslabs. Her cousin Pim wanted it left so the children would ask what it meant. Ada had never been sure what it meant, only that the stag in the lower quarter looked at the village as if the village were the thing passing through.

She put her palm flat on the cold carving, on the blue shadow where the pines met the water. Lichen had grown into the deer's antlers. Behind her a lamp moved along the wall, then a second lamp, and she heard Pim's boots stop short at the gap.

Neither of them said anything. Ada stepped aside and let him see the moon. After a while Pim laughed, a short surprised sound, and set his lamp down on the wall beside hers, where they could both reach it.
