Mountain and pine forest in a diamond
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a mountain range with jagged peaks rising above a dense pine forest, all enclosed in a diamond-shaped outline. The peaks are rendered with fine line detail and the lower slopes and trees are built up with stippled dots for shading. A separate bold chevron line sits below the diamond, and the design is shown in black and grey ink on a forearm.

Gerry's never sends a car out to the hills after midnight, so when the radio crackled with a fare to Hollin Edge at quarter to two, I grabbed it before Sandra could give it to someone with a bigger motor. The man in the back smelled of wet cement and had a sketchbook open on his knee, his pencil moving in short dabs even over the potholes on Penistone Road. He didn't say where he wanted to go until we'd passed the last chip shop, and then he only said, keep going till the houses stop.

We drove until the houses stopped. The road bent up past a reservoir I'd never looked at properly, black as a slate roof under the cloud, and the streetlights thinned to a single orange bulb on a post. He asked me to pull in by a field gate. He got out and stood in the road, head tipped back at the ridge the way you'd check a shelf for level. When he came back he leaned in at the window and showed me the page. He'd drawn a line of peaks with the shading dark along the bottom, and below them a crowd of pines standing shoulder to shoulder, each one made of a thousand tiny dots.
"For the wall above my desk," he said, "so I stop forgetting what the sky looks like when there's no orange in it." He paid with a folded twenty, said keep the change, and walked off up the verge without a torch.
I drove back down with the heater roaring and the meter off. At the lights by the Parkway I found his sketchbook wedged between the seats, the elastic still warm. I'll take it back up on Sunday, when the road is light enough to see the peaks.
