Galaxy sky over mountains and pines
Geometric · Ribs · Mixed · Photo
A diamond-shaped tattoo shows a blue and pink nebula with small white stars across the top half. The lower half has outlined mountain peaks with diagonal hatched shading, above a solid black silhouette of pine trees. The bright colour of the sky contrasts with the black and white of the landscape, and the design fills the frame against plain skin.

Tomasz had painted the sky onto the back cloth of the big top for the last time in March, when the canvas was still damp from Cornish rain and Mr Halloran wanted the stars brighter. He mixed the blues himself in a tin bath, cobalt with a little teal, and added a smoky pink where the nebula was meant to bleed into the dark. Halloran said audiences paid for the sky more than the lions, and Tomasz had never been sure whether that was a joke.

By the autumn the company had shrunk to eleven wagons and a generator that coughed on every hill. They wintered in a field above a Highland glen where pines crowded the wire fence and the mountains stood up grey, their ridges striped with old snow. Tomasz had hung canvas since he was fourteen, but he could not sleep through the wind, so one night he took a torch and walked up past the last fence post to the rocks.
Ines from the trapeze act found him there, wrapped in a coat that smelled of resin and horse. She had heard the sale would go through after New Year. She did not ask him about it. She pointed past his shoulder at the peaks, where the real stars were sharper and colder than anything he had ever managed with a brush, and said the trouble with a painted sky was that nobody ever had to climb anywhere to see it.
In the morning they struck the tent in a cold drizzle. Tomasz rolled the backdrop with the sky facing in, then unrolled one corner of blue on the wet grass and left it there, so the frost could have something to work on before the lorries came.
