Mountain range, pine and star pattern on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A shaded mountain range runs across the upper back with a single tall pine tree at the right-hand end. Above the peaks, a group of small dots joined by fine lines forms a star-like pattern. The mountains use fine hatched shading in dark grey and black, with light highlights on the ridges, and the linework is delicate. The image is a close, slightly angled shot of bare skin with the shoulder blade visible, and the design sits on the left side of the frame.

Day nine, and the cloud has finally lifted off the col, so I could take the bearings I'd promised Harold. Scree ridge to the north, the broad shoulder he calls Tallow, and then the true peak, which the map gives no name at all. I've taken to calling it Lantern, after the one my father carried up the Ffynnon path every winter when the lamp oil ran low.

Last night, before the mist came down again, I sat in the tent door with the theodolite on my knee and counted stars until the cold made my fingers useless. Seven of them lay in the shape of a bent hook, the same hook my father drew in the margin of every letter he ever sent me. He said it was the Ram's heel or the Plough's handle, depending on which book he'd read last. I never told him I'd stopped caring which.
The wind came round this morning and brought the smell of wet pine up from the valley. One tree stands on the lower slope, tall and lone as a spire, where nothing else dares to root. I walked down to it at noon and laid my palm on the bark, which was colder than I expected. I've marked it on the sheet as a fixed point, though it appears on no survey I was paid for.
Tomorrow I go down to the market at Llanfair for coffee and a clean pair of socks, rain or no rain. I'll post this with the bearings enclosed. Tell Father the hook is still there. Tell him I'm following it home.
