Mountain range in a circle on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A circular fine line outline encloses a mountain range, with peaks and a ridge on the left and a larger shaded peak on the right. The mountains are built from stippled dots and light linework, giving the shading a textured, grainy look. The black and grey design sits centrally on a pale forearm against a dark background, with a dark wristband visible below it.

The rain has been coming sideways down Kettle Row since before the stalls opened, and you have been counting the awnings that still hold. Mrs Okonedo's canvas has sagged into a basin, the fishmonger has given up entirely, and only the old map seller at the end, Tobias Frye, still sits under his dripping gazebo. You bought a round brass loupe from him last spring for two pounds, and he has been waiting ever since for you to come back and tell him what you used it for.

He keeps his prints in a tin box, engravings of ranges nobody has walked in years, and he lays one out now on the wet oilcloth. Every peak is made of dots, thousands of them, punched into the copper so the shadows come out grainy as sugar. "You can't draw a mountain with a line," he says. "You have to let the weather get at it." You laugh, because it is the sort of thing he says, and then you see that he means it.
The print is a circle, the ridge cut off at the rim on the left, and the largest peak leaning to the right as though it has just turned its back on the crowd. He slides it into a paper sleeve and presses it into your hands, waving away the coins you hold out. You walk home with it under your coat, the rain drumming on the paper, and stop on the bridge where the river is loud enough to hide your thoughts.
At the kitchen table you set the loupe over the biggest peak and count the dots, one by one, until the rain finally stops against the window.
