Double circle tattoo on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A photograph of a forearm with a simple tattoo of two overlapping circles, one a thin outline and the other a heavier, slightly offset ring. The linework is loose and hand-drawn, with uneven weight and some shading along the inner edges. The image is black and white, with the arm lit against a dark background and the tattoo sitting near the centre of the frame.

Ada drew the first ring on the harbour wall with a stick of charcoal, going round twice because the stone was uneven and the tide was coming in fast. My grandfather taught us that a circle is only true when you stop fretting over it. So she stopped, and the line came out thin and a little wandering, like a thought she hadn't finished.

Her second ring was heavier and sat a little to the left, the one she made after the boat did not come back from the Stacks. We had counted the lamps from the cottage window for three nights. On the fourth morning she walked down to the slipway with a tin of Indian ink and a darning needle and said she would mark the thing she could not mend.
I held the bowl of water while she worked. The needle went in and out and she did not flinch, though she went over the same stretch again to thicken it. Shading along the inside, she said, so the ring looked like it was rolling away from the light. The gulls were already quarrelling over the herring boxes, and neither of us spoke until she had wiped her hands on her skirt.
When she finished she pressed a wet thumb into the middle, smudging the ink, and said the empty part was the important part. The tide comes back to the same shore, she said, but never to the same stone. I have not looked at that ring since without seeing the grey water past the Stacks, and her small steady hand keeping its shape.
