The sun had gone down behind the ridge by the time Nell reached the hut, and the peaks had swallowed the last of the light so that only their outlines held on against the sky. She set her pack on the step and rubbed the ache out of her shoulder, thinking of the letter she had left unopened on the kitchen table in Cwm Bran. Her father wrote every Sunday in pencil, always the same three lines about the weather and the sheep. She knew what the fourth line would say if she ever opened it.

Inside, the stove was cold but someone had left matches in a tin on the shelf, and a page torn from a ledger was pinned beside the door. It listed names and dates going back forty years, each followed by a single word. Most read rest. A few read home. The newest entry was in a hand she didn't recognise, and it said only: come back for the moon.

She went out again with the matches in her coat. Above the notch between the two highest peaks a round white moon was lifting, so close to the rock it looked like it had been set there on purpose. She stood until her fingers numbed, watching it clear the summit, and then she turned around and started the walk down, not running, the way her grandmother had taught her to take a hill in the dark. Behind her the snow on the peaks went the colour of milk, and for once she did not look back to see whether anyone was following.
