Hatched mountain range design
Black and grey · Flash
A line drawing of a jagged mountain range with three main peaks running across the frame. The ridges are outlined in dark ink and the slopes are shaded with dense diagonal hatching and light grey wash. The design sits centred on a plain white background with no body or skin visible.

The rain has been coming sideways across the market since seven, and you have stopped pretending the tarpaulin keeps anything dry. Your stall is a trestle table of old Ordnance sheets in plastic sleeves, and the only customer who has lingered is a man in a yellow cagoule who keeps turning a single sketch over in his hands.

It is a hatched ridge, three peaks drawn in ink, shadows laid down in short diagonal strokes like rain itself. You know the drawing. Your father made it on the back of a shipping invoice the winter he came off the fells for good, and you have kept it in the cash tin for thirty years because he never said what the peaks were called.
"Where's it from?" the man asks. "Looks like the Pennines in a bad mood."
You tell him the truth, which is that you do not know, only that the middle peak was the one your father pointed at when he couldn't sleep. The man nods, pays two pounds in coins gone green, and tucks the sketch inside his coat where the wet cannot reach it.
Then the rain eases for the length of a breath, and you see the ridge the way he must have seen it: three summits with cloud pooled in the saddles, and a path that is only ever about the next step. You fold the tarpaulin, leave the maps in their sleeves, and walk home the long way past the church.
