The 6:52 for Cairnhollow had already pulled out when the stranger reached the ticket window, his map folded to the wrong corner and his breath still smoking from the stairs. Nobody at Kettlebrook Junction ever said the word soon about the Highland line, and you had long since stopped apologising for it.

He studied the peaks printed in the margin of the timetable, the little rising saw-teeth you had drawn there yourself at nineteen, when your grandfather still ran the signal box and let you sit in the cab with the logbook. The sun sat above them in a ring of tiny hatch marks, pointing north, because your grandfather had insisted that was how you found your way back to anywhere. Those are the peaks, you said. You can see them from the platform when the cloud lifts.

Outside, the cloud did lift, slowly, the way it always did after the eight o'clock, and the range came up grey and sharp above the goods yard. He stood beside you at the glass for a long while and said nothing. Then he laughed quietly and asked whether you had a pen, so you handed him the one from the till drawer.

He drew a small compass on the back of his ticket, a circle with a point at the top, and slid it under the grille. Keep that, he said, for the next time the line takes you somewhere you did not mean to go. You pinned it above the window beside the timetable, where it still hangs, pointing north at the peaks.
