Mountain range silhouette on an upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of a jagged mountain range with peaks of varying height sits across the upper arm. Thin black outlines form the skyline, and the lower sections of each peak are filled in solid black. The ink is black only, set against a smooth, plain background.

Dear Tomasz,

The clerk at Kessel Gap stamped my papers twice this morning, once for the crossing and once, I think, out of spite, because the ink on my survey licence had smudged into the word for mountain. He let me keep the pencil. I have been drawing the skyline from the customs hut window since six, the same ragged run of four peaks you walked past every spring when we were boys, the tallest one shouldering up like a dog that wants to be let in.
Mostly I trace them to keep my hand steady. The lower halves of the peaks are the easy part: they sink into the fog and I fill them solid with the side of the lead until the paper goes glossy. The upper edges are where the ridge lies, thin and nervous, and I have had to redraw the middle summit three times because the wind off the far slope keeps moving it.
Yesterday a girl from the village brought me tea and asked what I was measuring. I told her the height of the world. She laughed and said the world is much taller than that, it just keeps its head in the cloud. I wrote that down. I think you would have liked her.
I will be back on the valley road by Thursday, if the border guard lets me carry the drawing across. If he does not, I will leave it in the drawer with the stamp, and you can come and look at it yourself. Mind the goat track above the mill. Your mother still asks after you.
Yours, Anselm
