Mountain range on a forearm

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A simple outline of three mountain peaks runs across the forearm, with the largest peak on the right. Solid black patches inside the peaks and along the ridgelines suggest shadow and snow. The ink is black on pale skin, and the tattoo sits centrally in a close, slightly angled shot against a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You have the window at the end of Ward Six to yourself once the corridor lights drop to their night setting and the trolleys stop complaining. From there you can see the car park, the wheelie bins, and beyond them the hills, three of them, the tallest on the right with its shoulder still pale under the sodium glow from the ring road. Mrs Okafor in bed four says they are the Pennine tops, though she has never walked them, and you say you have never walked them either.

Mr Hallam in bay two wants the time every ten minutes. You bring him water, check the chart, write the number in the book, and bring him water again. Around three he asks whether the big one on the right has a name. You tell him the map calls it something with too many consonants, and he says that's how people deal with things they can't climb, they rename them so the hill can't argue back.

By four the snow patches on the ridge catch the first grey light, and the peaks look as though someone drew them in a hurry with one black pen, lifting the nib wherever the ink ran short. You realise the hills are no nearer than they were at midnight, and nobody on the ward has moved any closer to the window either. Mr Hallam sleeps with his mouth open. You log the obs and the time.

You lift the blind a finger's width before the day staff arrive, and the three peaks stay exactly where they were.
