Airplane and world map on a foot
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A dark ink tattoo on the top of a bare foot shows a small airplane in flight, trailing a dotted line that loops across an outline of continents drawn in thin single lines. The linework is fine and mostly unshaded, with the ink looking dark grey to black on pale skin. The foot rests on a white fabric background, with a woven bracelet on the ankle and red nail polish on the toes.

The lift has been broken since Easter, so you climb the stairs of Ferndale House with a carrier bag of tins cutting into your fingers, and by the eleventh landing you have stopped counting. Mrs Okafor on nine shouts over the rail that the post came for you again, a fat envelope with a Lisbon stamp, and you tell her to leave it on the mat because your hands are full.

Inside, the flat smells of paraffin from the heater. Your sister's letter sits open beside the kettle, and she has drawn the route for you in blue biro on the back of a Brent cafe menu: a small aeroplane trailing a dotted line over the top of a page where the continents sprawl like spilt tea. Underneath she has written, Ten hours, Tomasz, no more, and I will be at arrivals holding a sign with your name spelt right this time. You wipe the table with your sleeve and follow the line with one finger, from Manchester to the coast of Africa and back again.
For twelve years you have treated that map as a thing other people own. You have kept the flat tidy for the landlord, paid the meter on Thursdays, and told yourself the lines on paper are only lines. But the dotted path ends in a loop above the shore, as if the pilot is circling, deciding whether to come down.
You fold the menu into your jacket pocket and unpack the tins one by one onto the shelf. Then you open the window onto the grey car park, where a real plane crosses low over the estate with its lights blinking, and for once you do not look away until it is gone.
