Small airplane tattoo on a forearm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A woman seen from behind raises her arm towards a hazy view of a hillside town, with her face turned away from the camera. A small, solid black silhouette of an airplane sits on the outer forearm, above a metal wristwatch. The shot is in natural daylight, with a striped top and soft blue sky, and the tattoo is the clear focal point against the muted scenery.

Sit down, the lot of you, the band can wait ten minutes. Dancing is older than this hall, and so is the story I'm about to tell, which is about a mail pilot called Ansel Ferris who flew the valley route back when the hills still had no road. Every Thursday at noon he crossed over the old town of Calder Brae, low enough that the washing lifted off the lines. Nell Harrow, who ran the bakery at the foot of the steps, would climb the chapel wall and lift her arm, just so, and wait. He never once waved back. He said a man with both hands on the stick had no business waving.

Then the war took the mail run and sent Ansel east, and Nell stopped climbing the wall. Eleven years later a letter came up the valley in his handwriting. It said only that he was coming back on the Thursday flight and would take one pass over the chapel before landing at the field. The whole town crowded onto the wall that noon, and Nell stood at the front with her arm already raised, because she had been practising for eleven years and saw no reason to stop now.
The silver wing dipped once over the roofs, so close the dust flew off the cobbles, and a hand came out of the cockpit and lifted high. Nell laughed so hard she nearly fell off the wall, and the baker's boy said afterwards that she was still laughing when the plane had gone behind the hill. Now then, who owes me a waltz?
