Mountain range tattoo on ankle
Blackwork · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A photograph of a black mountain range tattoo on the back of a bare ankle, near the heel. The peaks are drawn with bold, dark linework and solid black fill, with some lighter grey shading on the ridges. The design is in black ink only, sits centrally on the skin, and is shown against a pale blue and white cloth.

Brother Anselm had been sent up to the high house in October, when the mules were already gone down the valley road and the snow had not yet settled on the Kessel ridge. The prior gave him a box of charcoal, a flat board of pear wood, and one instruction: draw the skyline as it stands from the cloister gate, so that whoever came after would know where the mountains were when the cloud sat on them.

He worked for three days before he understood the difficulty. The range did not hold still. From the gate the eastern peak sat above the western one; from the well it slid behind. He tried to fix it with a plumb line and gave up. On the fourth morning he put the charcoal down, walked out into the wind, and copied the outline from memory, pressing hard where the rock broke and letting the black settle into the shadowed faces the way dusk did.
When the board was finished it looked like a row of teeth biting a grey sky. The old cellarer, who had never climbed higher than the orchard wall, studied it for a long time and said it was too dark, the mountains were not so angry. Anselm agreed, then went back to the gate at dusk and saw that the light had turned the same colour as his lines. He left the board unvarnished on the windowsill. By spring the cloud had lifted, and the ridge stood exactly as he had drawn it, only smaller.
