Mountain range tattoo on a foot

Other · Black and grey · Photo

A bare foot with a black linework tattoo of a mountain range running from the top of the foot towards the toes. The peaks are drawn with sketchy, broken lines and some dark shading in the tallest ridges. The image is in black and grey on a tiled floor, with the foot filling most of the frame.

Dear Tomas, the ridge you asked about is still wrong on the sheet. Mr Abernethy says the summit sits three hundred feet west of where I drew it, but I have walked it twice now in fog and I know where the rock breaks. I drew the broken lines on purpose. Where the ground is certain the ink runs solid, and where it is only guessed at I let the pen skip, so anyone reading the map can see the honest parts from the rest.

Mr Abernethy did not like it. He held the sheet to the lamp on Tuesday and said a map was for men who had never been lost, and that nobody paid for doubt. I said the mountain was not doubtful, only shy, and that a line which stops tells you more than one that pretends. He laughed, which I took for permission, and went off to his dinner without taking the sheet.

So I have taken it. The bakery on Fleet Street opens at four and the baker's boy lets me in through the back to warm my hands on the proving trays. I have pinned the sheet to the wall above the flour sacks where the light from the oven falls. In the grey hour before the shutters go up, the dark ridges stand out from the paper and the pale gaps between them look like snow still lying in the gullies.

Come up when the thaw has cleared the pass. I will show you the true line of the summit, drawn with the ink still wet, and you can tell me which parts you believe.
