Three small mountain peaks on a foot
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
The image shows three small mountain peaks drawn in black outline with grey shading in their lower sections, sitting on the outer side of the foot near the heel. The linework is fine and clean, and the shading gives the peaks a soft, simple depth. The skin is shown in a close crop against a grey floor, with the tattoo placed low in the frame.

On the Thursday she went up with clean sheets and found him gone, his bag gone, and on the washstand a folded sheet of squared paper weighted with a pebble. Three peaks, drawn in heavy pencil, the middle one taller, and beneath them in small capitals: NOT THE SEA. She did not know what he meant. She had lived beside the Atlantic for fifty-one years and had never once thought of it as a thing that could be mistaken for anything else.
She took the paper down to the kitchen and propped it against the teapot. Her nephew Ivo, who delivered coal and knew the coast road, said the surveyor had caught the early bus inland toward the quarry, where the old workings had flooded into a lake. There was a rock face up there that looked like three teeth in a row, and the men called it the Sisters.
Mrs Pryor folded the paper along its creases and put it in her apron pocket. The following spring a parcel came with a Welsh postmark, holding a pebble wrapped in tissue and a second sheet: the same three peaks, now shaded at their feet with soft grey, and no words at all.
