Mountain peaks and birds on ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink tattoo of three mountain peaks sits across the side of a foot near the ankle, with five birds in flight below the peaks. The linework is thin and sketchy, with some shading strokes on the mountain faces and the birds drawn as simple silhouettes. The image is in colour only in the skin and clothing, with the tattoo in black ink on a plain background.

Below her the valley was still in shadow, the river a grey thread between the shoulders of the hills, and the peaks stood up white against a sky that had not yet decided what colour it wanted to be.

She had walked up from the hut at Bwlch Du before the cook was awake, carrying a flask of sour tea and the tin with her father's letters in it. He had gone over this pass twenty years ago with a surveyor's chain and never come back down the same way, and the letters stopped in the spring. Her mother had said the birds were just birds. Aune had not argued, because nobody who had ever lived under these peaks believed that.
The birds wheeled once above the scree, dropped low over the ridge, and then the leader broke off and swung east, towards the notch where the old mule track ran. Aune followed the line of their flight with her finger, the way you trace a route on a map, and found the place where the rock had split in the shape of a hand. Under it, wedged in a crack, was a glint of tin.
She climbed down to it slowly. Inside the box was a single page, folded in four, and on it in her father's cramped capitals: THEY ALWAYS LEAD YOU TO WATER. FOLLOW THEM DOWN.
