Mountains and sea in a circle on a leg

Blackwork · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A circular tattoo shows three peaked mountains rising above a band of rippling water, with the sky rendered as horizontal lines that fade towards the top. The design is built from fine parallel and wavy black linework, with denser solid black in the water and shaded hatching on the mountain slopes. The circle is centred on the leg, with the pale skin of the leg framing it against a plain, softly blurred background.

The customs hut on the ferry quay smelled of wet wool and burnt coffee, and Ines had been waiting since six for the mist to lift. Officer Dalgaard turned her passport over twice, as though the back might say something different from the front. "Three peaks, you told the radio," he said. "Which one is the Swedish side?"

"None of them," she said. "The Swedish side is the flat one, behind the buoy. The three are on this side, and they only come up when the water goes still."

He looked past her through the salt-streaked window. The strait lay dark and flat, ruled with small wavering lines where the current pulled against the tide. Above it the sky had gone the colour of pewter and was banded with cloud, each stripe thinner than the last until the bands gave up near the top.

Ine's grandfather had kept a brass porthole from a wrecked trawler set into the kitchen wall of his cottage on the northern rock, so he could watch the water without standing up. He said the view was round because the sea insisted on being round. She had drawn it for him once on the back of a tide table, three humps and a rippling floor, and he had pinned it beside the glass without comment. Dalgaard stamped the page and slid the passport back across the counter. "There," he said, nodding at the window. For a moment the mist tore open and three peaks stood up out of the water, exactly where her grandfather had always said they would be. Ines pressed her palm to the cold glass and let them stay there, for once not needing to count them.
