Circular mountain valley landscape on a leg

Dotwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A circular tattoo shows a mountain valley with ridges, a dark foreground slope and a pale winding river running towards the bottom right. The shading is built from fine stippled dots that model the peaks, rock faces and sky, with a lighter area at the centre. The design is black and grey and sits centred on smooth, pale skin against a plain background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Edric Coombe had been stippling the same ridge for three days, the copper plate cold under his lamp, when the carrier from Sallow Pass arrived with a letter that said only that the river had shifted again. He set down his finest needle and read it twice. The surveyor's sketch he had been copying showed the Harrow valley as it stood in the old king's time, and nobody had drawn the new bend.

He went up in October with a satchel of burnishers and a borrowed grey mare. The pass was narrow enough that the light came in sideways at noon, pooling on the dark slope below the inn while the far peaks sat in a thin haze. At the lip of the valley he stopped. A landslide had dammed the old course into a brown lake, and the river now ran pale and straight across the meadow like a ribbon somebody had dropped.

Hannah Vell found him there at dusk, sketching with a stub of charcoal on the back of his invoice. "You'll want the lower bend," she said. "That's where the sheep go." He shook his head. He wanted the sky, the flat band above the ridges where nothing had happened yet, and he told her he would leave it bare, since no engraver could stipple air honestly.

Back in the workshop he worked by a single lamp until the plate was ready. When he pulled the first proof, the new river came off in fine grey dots, the peaks darkened into shadow, and the centre of the sky printed as clean white paper. Hannah's letter sat folded beside the press. He pinned the proof to the wall beside the old sketch and left them both there, one showing what had been, one showing what was.
