Waves and clouds in a circle on a thigh

Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A circular design shows rolling sea waves in the lower half and cumulus clouds against a hatched sky above. The linework uses fine parallel lines and cross-hatching to create shading, resembling a woodcut or engraving. The image is entirely black and grey and is shown tightly cropped on the thigh.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The cloth was the last thing in the wagon that still believed in weather. I painted it the winter Dad's knee went, forty feet of muslin stretched across the barn floor. I did the sky first, in fine parallel lines because I couldn't afford proper blue and didn't trust it anyway. The clouds came after, piled up like unwashed sheets on a line. Then the sea, rolling in along the bottom edge where the ring curtain met the sawdust, so that when the lamps dropped the audience felt they were sitting on a beach.

By August we were playing four towns a week instead of seven. The lion had gone to a sanctuary in Wales. Teodor, our strongman, had taken a job loading ferries at Dover. The sea on the cloth had split along one seam, and the hatching was lifting at the corners where damp had got under the paint. Mr Hollis wanted it cut down for patches. Nobody looks at backdrops anymore, he said, they look at their phones. I told him the phones were lit by the same cold light as our lamps, and he laughed the way a man laughs at a joke about his own funeral.

On the last night at Margate I climbed the ladder with a pot of ink and the cheapest brush I could buy. I drew one more wave on the cloth, right over the split. It wasn't a copy of the others. It was a curl going the wrong way, as if the sea had thought better of it and decided to rise rather than fall. Nobody saw it but me and the ring girl, who said it looked like something coming up out of the ground.

They folded the cloth on Sunday and shipped it in a crate stamped fragile, sea side up. I kept a scrap the width of my palm. It lives in my coat pocket now, and whenever I reach in for change my thumb finds that one wave going the wrong way.
