Colour neo-traditional tattoo on an upper arm showing a sunrise over snowy mountains and pine trees, with a red and gold sun and three sports team emblems.

Mountains, sunrise and team logos on upper arm

Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a sunrise with striped rays above snow-capped mountains and pine trees, over a large red circle with a gold sun. Three sports team emblems, including a stylised bird and a basketball-themed badge, overlap the lower part of the design. The bold dark outlines and smooth colour fills give it a graphic, flat look, and the design fills the upper arm and shoulder.

Hush now, and mind the fiddle, because the sun was late the year the Hollis brothers finished the dance hall at the foot of the pass. Late by a whole morning. Folk came up from the valley in their Sunday boots to ask the mountains what they were keeping it for, and the mountains, being mountains, said nothing and kept their snow on.

Old Ada Penrose ran the floor that winter. She had a red door painted over the stage and a gold sun cut from a tin lid, nailed above the bar, and she swore the real one would rise if the band played a waltz slow enough to wake it. So they played. Three nights the fiddler sawed until his bow frayed to string, the piano man drank his own cider, and on the third dawn a crack of light ran out over the peaks like someone had pulled a striped sheet off the washing line.

The rays came first, blue and rose, then the highest snow caught fire and the pines on the slopes stood up one by one to look. The bird-keeper's boy ran down the road shouting that the sun had come, and the man with the basketball badge on his hat rolled a ball down the steps just to hear it bounce. Everybody crowded into the doorway to watch the gold circle lift clear of the red, slow as a dancer lifting a hem.

When it was clear of the hills Ada came out onto the step, wiped her hands on her apron and looked at the crowd. 'Well,' she said, 'that's the waltz paid for. Who's buying the next one?' Nobody moved, and the sun, unbothered, climbed on.
