The mill at Hollow Brook had stood empty since the spring flood, so when the church bell rang at dusk for no reason anyone could name, Agnes Pell took a lantern up the lane and found the grain loft full of mice. They sat in rows on the flour sacks like a congregation, ears pricked, and at the front sat the oldest, a grey fellow with a little brass crown cut from an old curtain ring wedged between his ears. He lifted one paw and asked her, very politely, to stop the trapping in Hollow Brook, because the traps had taken his sister, his cousin and a boy's whistle that he had been fond of.

Agnes laughed and said the mill was hers to keep clean, and the mouse only nodded as if he had expected that. He told her the town could have its bread if it left his people their share. He would take the mill's one bright thing in exchange for leaving the village alone, and he pointed a whiskered nose at the door. Her father had painted a red heart on it the year before he went to sea, and it had faded to the colour of a bruise. She took down the old paint tin from the shelf, scraped the lid clean, and set it on the sill as a bargain, though she could not have said why.

In the morning the loft was bare, and the traps were lying open in the yard with nothing caught in them. The paint tin was gone too, and so was the heart from the door, which now showed only a clean square of grey wood. Agnes hung the brass crown on the nail where her father's coat used to be. Some evenings the wind comes up the lane and pushes the mill door against its frame, and it makes a small, soft knock, the only sound left in the place.
