Dear Rosie, the ewes have started lambing early and Dad says the frost will hold until March, so I'm writing this at the kitchen table with my boots steaming by the range. Mum has moved the lambing pens into the barn because the paraffin heater keeps going out, and Tom and I take turns sitting up with it in our coats.

I found your drawing in the pocket of the old waxed jacket you left on the hook. The little crown with three hearts, one for each of us, drawn on the back of a feed merchant's invoice. I pinned it above the dresser with a drawing pin. Dad saw it and said nobody on this farm has been royalty since the Harrisons' pig took the prize at Skipton, but he hasn't taken it down.

The black-faced ewe in pen four had twins just after three this morning, and the second one wouldn't stand. I rubbed it with straw the way Gran showed us until it sneezed, then tucked it back under her with the first one. Tom said a queen's job is to make everyone else do the work, and I told him the queen gets the hearts, which is more than he's ever given me.

The snow came down properly this afternoon and the yard went white in the lamplight. I've kept the spare bed made up for you. Come at Easter and bring the good scissors. Love, Nell.

P.S. The lamb is called Crown. Tom refuses to call it anything else.
