Black line drawing of a solid heart joined to a thin looping line with a small dot, shown as a tattoo design on a plain white background.

Solid heart with looping line design

Black and grey · Flash

A solid black heart sits at the upper right, connected by a single continuous line that loops into a teardrop shape at the lower left. A small ink dot floats to the upper left of the loop. The linework is slightly brushy and uneven, and the heart is filled solid, with no shading or colour on a plain white background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dad had sold the last of the balloons by the time the wind turned on the Ramsgate field, and I was still holding the spool. Twelve feet of string, greasy from the waltzer's chains, wound round my fist until my knuckles went white. The black foil heart above the helter-skelter had got away in a gust, and I watched it drift past the top car of the Ferris wheel, shrinking the way a bad idea shrinks once you finally look at it straight.

Mrs Okonedo ran the candyfloss stall and had told me twice that a string held too tight will snap. She was right, as she usually was. I let the spool run a little, and the heart came back down the sky to meet me like a dog that knows its name.

Then the line snagged on the tent pole of the shooting gallery, and I had to kneel in the trampled grass with my nose an inch from a dropped wallet and the smell of rain on canvas. I worked the knot loose one loop at a time. A speck of ink from the coconut shy lad's brush had landed on my sleeve that morning, and it sat there the whole while, like a full stop nobody had asked for.

When I stood up, the heart was bobbing at the tent flap, black against the grey, tugging gently at my hand. I didn't tie it to anything. I just kept hold, and we walked back to the lorries together.
