King and Queen script hand tattoos
Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands are clasped together, one showing the word King in flowing script with a crown beside it, and the other showing Queen in matching script with a crown above. The linework is bold and smooth, with the lettering shaded in solid black ink. The palest background sits behind the hands, which fill most of the frame.

Dear Marguerite, you will not believe what Walter did at the allotment society dinner. He stood up after the second course, pulled a pen from his waistcoat and wrote KING across the back of his hand in the loopy copperplate he uses for seed labels, then made me do the same to mine. I wrote QUEEN and smudged the crown so it looked like a hat. The committee laughed, and Mrs Oddie asked whether we'd be pricing the prize marrows by the pound now.

Here is the real business. Walter has lost the sweet pea trophy to the Pargeter brothers for eleven summers, and this year he bet them his greenhouse heater that our runner beans would beat theirs by a full yard. I told him beans do not respect bets. He said beans respect whoever talks to them nicely, and I have been talking to ours every evening since April, whether he likes it or not.
Then the frost came in May and took the Pargeters' whole bed in a single night. Ours survived under the old sacking I never threw out. Walter cried, which I had not seen since his mother's funeral, and then he claimed it was hay fever.
The crowns, I think, are his idea of a joke about who really runs the plot. I say the queen does and the king just carries the fork. Come up in August and judge for yourself, because the beans are climbing the cane fence faster than either of us can tie them back. Love, Irene.
