Two red roses on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows two large roses, one above and one below, with the upper bloom partly overlapping the lower. The petals are rendered in smooth, realistic shading with soft highlights and deep red-to-black shadows along the folds. The roses fill most of the frame against a plain indoor background with a partial second tattoo visible at the right edge.

The carter Edwin Marr came over Hollin Gap in the last of the snow with a cart of salt and a lame mule, and at the summit he found a rose bush growing out of a crack in the rock. It was red as a coal, with two blooms on one stem, one set high above the other, and it had no business flowering in March.

At the inn below, old Gerta set down her bread knife when he told her. She said there had been two sisters once, Anna and Liesl, who kept the pass house between them. The elder went up in the snow to fetch a doctor for their father, and the younger followed with a lantern. Neither came back down. In spring the rose came up where the elder had fallen, and the younger's bloom grew beneath it, leaning in as if to shelter it from the wind.
Edwin meant to take a cutting to his wife in the valley. He reached for the stem, and the upper bloom bent away from his hand, though there was no wind at all. He tried again with his knife and the blade slid off the wood as if it were glass. So he left it, paid Gerta for his supper, and went on down with his salt.
He did not look back until the bend below the pass. When he did, the mule had stopped, and the road behind him was scattered with petals, a thin red line running down the hill as far as he could see, and at the summit the two blooms stood open to the grey sky.
