Multicoloured leaf tattoo on a limb
Botanical · Other · Colour · Photo
A leaf with a pointed tip and a thin stem is outlined in heavy black linework and divided into many irregular cells that mimic leaf veins and stained glass panes. Each cell is filled with a gradient of red, orange, yellow and green, with the richest reds toward the upper left and greener tones near the stem. The leaf sits centred on a smooth, lightly lit area of skin against a dark background.

The kiln had cooled overnight, and Ada Pryce went down the cellar steps with the lamp held out before her, because the cathedral glass was stacked in the dark like sheets of frozen water. Her uncle had left the autumn commission on the bench: a window for the almshouse chapel, twelve panes of leaves, and one of them still uncut.

Uncle Tom had cut leaves for thirty years and never once drawn a vein twice the same. He said the lead came first, the black lines that held everything together, and the colour was only what the light was allowed to do between them. Ada had spent a month learning to fire ruby from gold dust, so the richest reds sat high on the left where the sun came in before breakfast, and the greens crept down toward the stem where the glass ran cold.
On the last morning she laid the pattern over the cutting table and found her hand would not move. The leaf was a beech from the almshouse garden, one she had watched turn from her bedroom window all September. Each cell she traced felt like a patch of ground where rain had once sat. She cut the pane anyway, grinding the edges on the wet wheel until the shard fitted, and then she set the lead round it.
When the window went up in Advent, the low east light laid the leaf across the flagstones in pieces. An old woman in the third pew, who had lived on the almshouse row since before the war, stood up to see it better. Ada heard her say it looked as though it had been caught in the middle of falling. Her uncle said nothing, but he lifted the lamp and went back down the aisle ahead of her, slowly, so she could see where to put her feet.
